First Powerlifting Meet

Local Hero Lifts the Community: How Sara Wall Powered Velocity Fitness Gym to Powerlifting Glory

In the iron-forged world of powerlifting, where every squat tests your limits and every deadlift demands surrender to the grind, one local athlete is proving that true strength isn’t just measured in pounds—it’s built in the bonds of community. Meet Sara Wall, a 45 year old mum of two girls, whose recent triumph at the Mick Barry, Gloucester Powerlifting Competition on Saturday 23rd November, not only shattered personal records but also hoisted the flag for Velocity Fitness Gym, our neighbourhood’s heartbeat of hustle and heart.

The bar loaded to 145kg for Sara’s final deadlift attempt, the crowd hushed. For Sara, this wasn’t just a lift, it was the culmination of months of sweat-soaked mornings at Velocity Fitness Gym.  With a deep breath and a nod to her spotters (fellow gym members who’d travelled to cheer her on), she descended, exploded upward, and locked out. The roar that followed? It belonged to the Isle of Wight, represented proudly by one of our own.

Sara’s journey to the platform started humbly, like so many at Velocity. A new mum with little direction in her fitness journey. She wandered into our fitness club not chasing medals, but clarity. “Here, the coaches taught me it’s okay to load my own bar, literally! and stop chasing numbers on the scale and to concentrate on being strong and building muscle.” Sara said.  Under the guidance of Angie, her personal trainer, she dove into structured programs blending Olympic lifts with progressive overloads, all in a space that feels more like family than facility.

What makes Sara’s story?  It’s the gym’s secret sauce: a no-BS environment where beginners rub elbows with beasts. Our powerlifting corner, equipped with competition-grade bars and weight plates and monolifts, hosts weekly practice that mimic the real deal, building confidence rep by rep. Sara didn’t just train; she transformed, adding 30kg to her Deadlift, 25kg to her Bench press and 15kg to her squat. Her totals at the comp? A jaw-dropping 335 at 83kg body weight. This already makes her an advanced lifter, earning her a place on the leader board of Powerlifting for females in her weight category. But the real win? The Velocity logo on her T shirt, a badge of the community that believed in her first.

This isn’t a solo spotlight, it’s a team triumph. Sara’s prep rallies saw gym-goers boosting her confidence, training with her and sharing her enthusiasm for the sport. “When I hit that deadlift PR, I heard their voices in my head, ‘One more, you’ve got this!'” she says. It’s stories like hers that fuel Velocity’s mission: Since opening in 2014, we’ve sent numerous athletes to comps, from Bikini, Hyrox, Brazilian Jui Jitsu and Powerlifting, we have raised thousands of pounds over the years for local causes through Zumbathon’s, charity runs and fostered a vibe where “strong” means more than muscles, it means showing up for each other.

As Sandown braces for “winter’s chill”, Sara is already eyeing up more events in 2026 and Velocity instructors have eyes on coaching a gym team next. Sara’s advice? “Start small, stay consistent, and find your crew. Velocity Fitness gave me mine.” For those inspired to channel their inner lifter, we offer free intro sessions to powerlifting basics, because every champion starts with that first unrack.

Sara’s lift reminds us: Strength isn’t solitary. It’s the collective push that elevates us all. Drop by Velocity Fitness and feel the power. Who knows, your story could be next.

Female Powerlifting Team

Our Female Powerlifting Team took centre stage at the Open Day to show case their maximum lift. All they had to do was beat their own personal best on the day. We had some incredible Deadlifting from these strong, amazing women.

The scores on the board have been increased and they hungry to get stronger and go again at the next competition. One of our female powerlifters is taking part in her first Powerlifting meet in Gloucester in November. Keep an eye out for Sara’s performance videos.

We want to wish her luck and we know that she will represent Team Velocity and bring her best on the day.

Over 50’s Indoor Cycling

Our dedicated over 50’s Indoor Cycling group meet on Fridays at 9.30 for their 45 minute cycle class.

Indoor cycling offers a range of health benefits specifically beneficial for individuals over 50. It is considered a safe and effective way to promote overall wellness and maintain an active lifestyle.

Here are some key benefits:

  • Joint-Friendly Fitness: Indoor cycling is a low-impact exercise, which means it puts less stress on joints compared to high-impact activities like running. This makes it a suitable option for individuals experiencing joint pain, arthritis, or recovering from injuries.
  • Cardiovascular Health: Regular indoor cycling helps strengthen the heart, improves blood circulation, lowers blood pressure, and reduces the risk of heart disease and stroke. It can also help manage cholesterol and triglyceride levels.
  • Muscle Strengthening and Endurance: Cycling engages major muscle groups in the lower body, including the quadriceps, hamstrings, and calves. This helps build and maintain muscle mass, which is crucial for preserving mobility, balance, and reducing the risk of falls as we age.
  • Improved Mental Well-being: Exercise, including indoor cycling, has been shown to reduce stress, anxiety, and symptoms of depression. The rhythmic nature of pedalling can have a meditative effect, and social interaction in group classes can further boost mood and motivation.
  • Weight Management: Indoor cycling is an efficient way to burn calories and body fat, supporting weight management, which is a key factor in cardiovascular health

We have friendly group on a Friday and we have space for you to join us. There is limited spaces so go to our Book a Class page and put your name down. Pay as you go on a

Group Personal Training

We are now offering Group Personal Training due to the high demand of Personal Training that we receive.

Please read on and if this is not of interest to you, it might be to someone you know.

We have an extremely high success rate of people who have gained strength and mobility from our 121 sessions and now we can help more people at a fraction of the cost.

Group Personal Training combines the personalisation of one-on-one training with the motivational benefits of a group setting, offering tailored workouts and individualised coaching for a small group of clients with similar goals. There is a maximum of 4 people per session.

A certified personal trainer develops personalised fitness programs for each client, providing specific guidance, ensuring proper form, and adjusting exercises to meet different ability levels within the group. This format is more interactive and affordable than individual training,  yet provides more personalised attention and support than traditional group classes.

What to Expect in a Group Personal Training Session

Personalised Coaching: Even though you’re in a group, the trainer provides individualised feedback, corrections, and encouragement, similar to a one-on-one session.

Tailored Programs: The trainer designs a unique workout plan for each person, ensuring exercises are suitable for their specific fitness level, goals, and abilities. Over 50’s maybe experiencing joint issues and mobility issues. Our programs have low impact options and builds confidence gradually.

Individualised Exercise Adjustments: You won’t necessarily be doing the exact same exercise as everyone else. The trainer will adapt movements or provide different equipment to match your personal needs and progress.

Focus on Form and Progression: The trainer monitors your technique to prevent injury, ensures you’re using the correct weights, and helps you progress safely and effectively.

Group Dynamics and Motivation: Working out with others can provide motivation, accountability, and a sense of community, creating a more engaging fitness experience.

How it Differs from Other Fitness Formats  Vs. Individual Personal Training: Group Personal Training provides a shared, more affordable experience, while individual Personal Training offers undivided attention and a completely bespoke program.

Group Classes: In group classes (like Zumba or Pilates), the focus is often on a pre-set routine for everyone. In Group Personal Training, while the exercises might be similar, the trainer provides significant adjustments and personalized coaching to each individual.

Benefits of Group Personal Training

Cost-Effective: You receive personalized attention at a lower cost than traditional one-on-one training.

Increased Motivation: The group environment and friendly encouragement can help keep you committed and inspired.

Social Connection: You can build relationships with like-minded people on a similar fitness journey.

Expert Guidance: You get professional coaching, personalised workouts, and accountability from a qualified trainer.
